It has been a wonderful week in Penhallow this week where we have continued to delve a bit deeper into our new enquiry; What is the Commotion in the Ocean.

Year 1s have done a super job in their Phonics Screening Checks this week and it is wonderful to hear and see their progress in their reading.

In English, we continue to look at rhyming words to write our own verse for the Commotion in the Ocean story.

In maths, reception have been investigating more into patterns and year 1s are now exploring numbers to 100.

We managed to squeeze in a swim this week and the children all had fun moving around the pool and looking a little more into floating. We also enjoyed an athletics lesson, where we tested our pace and realised that we would get very tired if we tried to run our fastest when running for longer periods of time.

In Geography, we investigated where we lived and discovered the difference between a town, city or village.

We began our new PSHE topic of 'Changing Me' and the children enjoyed learning about our body parts and lifecycles.

Well done to Iylah who received her 55 badge in 99 club this week! Keep practicing your KIRFs to ensure that your maths facts are embedded and recalled quickly; this will help you to succeed in 99 club!

Well done to our 'People of the Week' this week for showing our school values. This term we focus on being enthusiastic in our learning. Dexter and Darragh were picked for showing super enthusiasm in their learning and I picked all of the Year 1s for being amazing in their Phonics Screening Checks!

We are looking forward to performing to you at the Polperro Festival on Tuesday and we have been busy learning our songs so we can 'wow' the crowds at the school day on the Big Green. We look forward to seeing you there!

This week is also a big week for sport at school, the Bridge School Games take place where children will be taking part in a variety of French themed activities. Please ensure PE kit is in all week and swimming kit will be needed if the weather is kind to us!

I have just updated the twinklGO! activities and extra reading opportunities so please pop on to have a go if you have any spare time over the weekend. This is all aimed at your child's relevant learning.

Enjoy a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday for another great week!

It's been another busy week, with performance practise and prop making well underway!

We launched our new enquiry 'What's On Our Doorstep?', thinking carefully about what we would like to learn this half term. In Geography, we revised compass directions and has a go at using 4 figure grid references. We've been spending time rehearsing for our 'rocking' Polperro Festival performance which is on Tuesday! We can't wait! Please continue to practise the songs and your speaking part! Links to the songs can be found in the previous blog post.

We have come to the end of Fractions in Maths. Year 2 have been working hard finding three-quarters of a set of objects and Year 3 have been applying pictorial strategies to find the non-unit fraction of an amount. We are ready to move on to the world of Statistics next!

English this week has involved lots of Polperro Festival rehearsal along with continuing to explore legends. We made predictions about the Polish legend we will be learning, 'The Cobbler and the Dragon' and today wrote descriptions of a dragon's lair using our senses.

Polite Reminder: Please can you ensure you are bringing your colour banded reading book in with you to school everyday.

Congratulations to Summer and Anya for being Landaviddy's People of the Week.

We hope you have a great weekend and see you on Monday.

TALLAND'S BLOG 14.6.24

SUMMER 2 has kicked off and there's been loads going on already!

I'm extremely pleased to say we have our final collage art pieces! They look fantastic! I can't wait for them to take them home for you to see!

Maths:
Year 4 have been measuring their way through length and perimeter. They have their post assessment next week... Eeeee!
Year 5 have been diving into position and movement. Why not ask them all about translation?

English:
Drama based - we have been rehearsing our production for Polperro Festival happening THIS TUESDAY! Hopefully you can make it. Talland have been working so hard. It really is looking fabulous!

Computing:
We've had a lot of fun using Excel this week. Children have been firstly, 'tinkering' on it to see what kind of madness they can create. Then, we have put our data from a science experiment into a spreadsheet and converted that data into a chart. The children have loved it and the finished results are excellent!

The Bridge School Games kick off next week. Could all children please make sure they have their PE kits in school ALL week. This is all about the up coming Olympic Games, Paris 2024. Date for your Diary: 26th July 2024 is when the Olympic Games start - I for one, CAN'T WAIT!

For Polperro Festival, children have been asked to try and bring in some clothing which resembles Victorian School Children. Ideally plane white, black, brown or grey. Please, please, please DO NOT feel you need to buy anything for their outfit!
Boys: A plain shirt and trousers. Waist coat, top hat and braces if you have them - not a problem if not.
Girls: A long plane dress or a plane shirt/blouse and long skirt. Or what ever you can find. There is no pressure what so ever!

A massive well done to the year 4's this week, who have completed their times tables checks. Every last one of them should be tremendously proud of themselves and a huge thank you to the year 5's for being so respectful to the year 4's throughout this week.

Finally, well done to Harrison and Tabbi for being nominated as writers of the week. Well done to Harley and Joey for being nominated as mathematicians of the week. Well done to Ashton and Thomas for being nominated as readers of the week.

That's all from us. We hope you have an incredible weekend.

Signing off from Mr. Langley, Mr. Bishop and Mrs. Hodge.

Chaipel Class are really immersing ourselves in our new enquiry, 'Did the Punishment Always Fit the Crime?' and this week, we have been investigating crime and punishment in Anglo-Saxon Britain. We have learnt about tithing, the wergild system of payment and some of the horrendous 'trials' that people accused had to endure whilst awaiting their time in court - guilty or not. We are very thankful for our modern-day justice system!

English
We have had a lovely week, learning about the features of crime-writing. We have looked into suspects, clues, red-herrings and motives/alibis. The children have thought about a period in history that they are basing their story around and have designed a fitting villain, writing a character descrption which really brings them to life! Their only criteria is for them to ensure that the crime committed links to the period and the punishment given. We have moved onto using AI to generate a setting for our crime-scene, which we will write about on Monday.

In Science, we are investigating states of matter and have begun by revisiting the properties of a solid, liquid and a gas. We will be separating, melting, evaporating, freezing and so much more...

Polperro Festival
Rehearsals are in full swing for Tuesday's festival. The children are working really hard and have created their own props too. Any final props from home need to be in on Monday, please. We are all super excited!

That's all from us so have a lovely weekend and see you all on Monday!

This has been a very busy and enjoyable week with rehearsals for the Polperro Festival.

Bridge School Games. Next week the children will all have the opportunity to participate in the Bridge School Games. This year there is a Parisian Olympic Theme to the 5 events that they will be trying their hand at. Please ensure your child has their PE kit in all week.

Polperro Festival Parade. Children and families are invited to attend the opening parade tomorrow to celebrate the first day of the festival. Families are invited to meet outside Polperro Village Hall at MIDDAY in preparation for a 12:30pm start. Please come dressed in colourful clothes/outfits – as bright and cheery as possible.

This week we have continued to talk about superheroes. The children have painted paper plates to make shields and used different coloured tissue paper to decorate super hero masks.
They have enjoyed play in the construction themed role play area where they have been building with the duplo and large soft shaped bricks and fixing with the tools.

At story time we have continued exploring the range of “Supertato” stories.
In maths, we have been counting, ordering and writing numbers 1-5 and finding sprecial objects up to 5.

In phonics the children enjoyed having a go at rhyming bingo. They explored and tried hard when identifying initial sounds in words and we went on a listening walk in the playground before recording what we heard by drawing pictures.

Have a great weekend

Chaipel Class have had a lovely first week back after half term.

We began, on Monday, with a visit from the NSPCC to give a talk to all Y5s and Y6s. The ladies were lovely and we really enjoyed the workshop.

English
We finished writing up our persuasive texts and shared our work with our peers who offered constructive advice and suggestions on how to improve our writing. Some wrote a letter to Mrs Hillman trying to persuade her to give Chaipel Class a 'Pool Party' at the end of term whilst other children wrote about the importance of daily reading - outlining the benefits to both attainment and positive mental health. These will be displayed as leaflets for all to read (in our school library) whilst Mrs Hillman will be receiving her persuasive letters next week...

Maths
Y5s have been working on reading and interpreting negative numbers whilst the Y6s have begun their second consolidation project entitled WHITE ROSE TOURS. They are applying all that they have learnt in Maths over their primary school years to real-life scenarios. This one being to study the climate of a range of popular holiday destinations. They will learn about the various aspects of planning a holiday, including airport and flight scenarios, hotel and budget planning.

Enquiry
We have begun to look into our final enquiry for this year, 'DID THE PUNISHMENT ALWAYS FIT THE CRIME OVER TIME?'
We will be looking into crime and punishment in Britain since the invasion of the Romans. This will lead to us writing our own crime-based narrative. The period the narrative will be set in is purely up to the individual and we are super excited to get started: we have already begun to design our own villain!

Swimming
We will be swimming as much as we can from now until the end of term so please make sure that swimming kits are in every day.

Ice Pop Friday
Ice Pops will be on sale every week so remember to bring £1 in!

That's all from me, so enjoy the extended weekend and see you all on Monday!!
Miss Randle and Mrs Clary.

Welcome Back!

Our first week back, and it has been a busy one!

We have enjoyed rounding off our previous enquiry 'Could You Be An Explorer?', by participating in a class Kahoot quiz and recalling as many things as we could and placing these in envelopes. We have been working hard on our Polperro Festival performance too. We can't wait to show you!

In Maths, Year 2 have continued our work on Fractions, learning the difference between unit and non-unit fractions and recognising the equivalence between one half and two quarters. Year 3 have been looking at how fractions make a whole and finding a fraction of a set of objects.

In English, we revised nouns, adjectives and adverbs. Can you recall what each of these are? We had a go at writing 2A and Double 'ly' Ending sentence types this week, thinking carefully about our choice of vocabulary. This half term, we will be looking at legends and we started by reading the legend of King Arthur. Next week, we will be creating a picture dictionary of all the Arthurian language we come across in the story.

Congratulations to Charlie and Zach for being Landaviddy's People of the Week. And a big well done to Summer and Oliver for achieving their 55 club this week.

Polperro Festival
We are working hard on our class performance for the festival. We have two songs that we have been rehearsing. Please find the links to these below. Any practise you can do would be amazing!

Welcome back to Summer Term!

This week, although a little shorter, has been full of fun and some wonderful learning.

We introduced our new enquiry; What is the Commotion in the Ocean? On Monday, we discussed, what we already know and what we want to learn about in this exciting topic. We had some great questions from the children! They would like to find the following and much, much more:
Are all fish herbivores, carnivores or omnivores?
How do fish communicate with each other?
Why is the sea blue?
Where is the star fishes face?
Does it hurt if you get pinched by a crab? (We hope to not find this out on our class beach trip to Talland Beach which is scheduled for the 1st of July!)

The children have already 'dived' into the enquiry by exploring our new English text; 'Commotion in the Ocean.' We are looking at the amazing vocabulary used, why this book is so much fun and what makes a good rhyme.

In maths, we have been exploring repeating patterns and their rules in Reception. Year 1 have been investigating position and direction and now know how to recognise their right and left.

We were very lucky to have a visit from Sheila on Wednesday from Sheila's School of Dance. The children (and staff) loved joining in with a high energy dance lesson.

Well done to Pehallow's People of the Week this week, Molly, Rosie, Sonny and Kai were all picked for showing 'Excellent' school values.

We return to school on Monday after a lovely 3 day weekend! Just a reminder that this week will see the Year 1s take part in their statutory Phonics Screening Check. Please try to take part in as much practice as possible with your child this weekend. This could be reading together, practising sounds, having a go on some of the TwinklGO! games (alien words is a good one to try out) or completing the worksheets that have gone home in book bags.

Enjoy a lovely weekend!

Mrs Taylor, Mrs G, Miss Colton, Miss Cullingford and Ms Hodge.

At story time we have been enjoying the stories of “Supertato” and “Supertato: Veggies assemble” The children have been busy making their own super potatoes to take home.
They have also been busy making superhero masks.

In phonics this week, the children have been listening to sounds they hear in their environment, clapping syllables of words and learning about rhyming words that they hear.

In maths we have been counting and grouping objects 1-5 and practicing writing numbers and creating marks that represent numbers.

It is INSET day today (Friday) but we look forward to seeing everyone back to nursery on Monday.

Have a good weekend

Happy Half Term!

We have had a lovely last week in Chaipel. We evaluated our tie-dye T-shirts and were thoroughly happy with the outcomes!

For Computing, we completed our investigation into using Micro:bits to record the temperatures of a range of rooms over a 5-day period. We then used a spreadsheet to input the data and then chose how to present our finding for analysis. Some represented using a line graph whilst others chose bar charts.

The House Captains and Vice Captains got together to count up the house points so far. It was very close, but the running order is...

Oak
Willow
Chestnut
Ash

Well done to all for showing our Bridge School Values in order to receive a house point - you are all most EXCELLENT!

We completed our enquiry into WHAT DO ALL LIVING THINGS HAVE IN COMMON? with a Kahoot quiz. Chaipel thoroughly enjoyed it and the results showcased everything that we had learned this half term.

That's all from me so have a lovely half term break and see you all back, ready for the final half term where we will be looking into Crime and Punishment with a distinctly Cornish theme!

Happy Half Term!

Just like that we have come to the end of Summer 1, and what a week we have had!

Year 2 have been busy completing their Y2 SATs papers this week. I have been very impressed with their focus and dedication - well done!

During our Wider Curriculum sessions this week, we enjoyed Art where we learnt about our final European artist of the half term, Salvador Dali. Can you recall the names of the artists we have learnt about? We loved exploring his surrealist paintings and experimenting by mixing primary colours to create swatches in our sketchbooks.

On Tuesday, we held the NSPCC assemblies, which all the children enjoyed. We know how to keep ourselves safe and to speak out to the safe adults in our lives.

We managed to get into the swimming pool for the first time this year, which was fantastic. We played a hot potato game and enjoyed our time in the water.

In English, we concluded our Biographies and began writing our own EXPLORERS acrostic poems. We collected a range of vocabulary and composed our poems using similes and alliteration.

In Maths, Year 3 have been working on recognising equivalent fractions on scales and number lines. Year 2 have been recognising and finding a third of shapes and numbers. We have also been accessing Mathletics to assess our understanding of Fractions.

Congratulations to Lowen for being chosen as Landaviddy's Person of the Week, and a big well done to the whole of Landaviddy Class who were recognised for their excellence this week.

Please continue to read your coloured book during the half term and practising your KIRFS. I have also uploaded spelling activities for you to access on TwinklGo over half term with the codes for Year 2 (DM1203) and Year 3 (YJ4019).

Reminder - Class photos are on the day we return to school, Monday 3rd June.

We hope you have a lovely half term and enjoy a well deserved rest!

Happy Half Term Break!

I hope you've enjoyed a wonderful inset day today!

We enjoyed a fantastic last week to finish our first half of the summer term.

The children have been working so hard in all of their learning this week and we are super proud of the amazing efforts they make everyday!

In maths, Reception have been exploring sharing and grouping. We finished the week off with some fabulous practical maths games exploring odd/even and doubling to 12. Year 1s have been working super hard in their fractions work and they can now recognise a half and a quarter of an object, shape or quantity.

English has been really fun this week where we continued to explore the story, What the Ladybird Heard. The children have really enjoyed re-enacting the story getting into the characters of Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len and using amazing vocabulary to describe the Ladybird.

We enjoyed the NSPCC assembly in our classroom on Tuesday where we learned all about Buddy and what he considered was not ok.

We hit the pool for our first swimming lesson of the year and although a little chilly still, we very much enjoyed it!

Well done to our people of the week this week, Felix, Esme and Evie G. They all showed examples of being excellent in their learning this week.

We hope you enjoy a wonderful Whitsun break and look forward to seeing you back in on the 3rd of June. This is the class photos day so please ensure your child is in their full school uniform.

Our PE days are on Wednesday and Friday, please ensure your child has their kit in on these days (and swimming kits for the summer term).

Finally, please try and take any chance you can to enjoy some reading together over the holidays, head onto TwinklGO! for some more learning opportunities. Year 1s will be taking part in their phonics screening checks on the week commencing 10th June so any reading will help with this. Information was sent home in book bags on Friday.

Fingers crossed for some holiday sunshine! Take care and I can't wait to hear all about your adventures on Monday 3rd.

It was another fun week in Penhallow this week where in Geography we explored what a messy map was and considered what the classroom and school looked like from a Bird's Eye View. We enjoyed working in groups to make our own.

In maths Reception have been exploring sharing and grouping. Year 1s are enjoying their fractions topic by looking at what is meant by half and quarter.

PE has encouraged us to improve our ball control skills whilst dribbling and our inside PE sessions have been all about balancing, breathing and travelling in different ways. We have really enjoyed our Yoga sessions this term.

We have continued investigating bugs for our enquiry question, Is it a Bug's Life? We have all now learnt new facts about our chosen minibeasts and written up our fact files.
We are enjoying our new text, What the Ladybird Heard and will be continuing exciting activities all about this text in our English next week.

Well done to Penhallow's People of the Week this week! Martha and Casey were chosen for showing excellent examples of our school values this week.

Well done also to Dexter, Finn, Theo and Evie G for achieving their next badges in 99 club this week.

As always, please try to keep up with your amazing efforts in your reading and pop onto twinklGO! for any extra activities, especially in preparation for the Phonics Screening Check that is coming up for the Year 1s in June.

Remember our PE days are on Wednesday and Friday, it is important that children have their PE kit in school to ensure they can join in with the activities. The weather is looking good for this week so perhaps we'll have our first dip in the pool for 2024! Please make sure labelled swimming kits (with hats) are in school too.

We hope that you enjoy a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing you on Monday for our shorter week before the half term Whitsun holiday.

Tie-dye-tastic!

It's been another busy week in Chaipel. Firstly, I want to say how incredibly proud I am of our Y6s. They were amazing this week, supporting each other through their SATs and were ambassadors of our Bridge School Values! Thank you parents and carers for supporing us and bringing them into school extra early for their bacon baps and a natter. It really helped! We celebrated in style after the last test, a lovely ice-cream from Noah's dad's cafe at Talland and then off to the beach. We did say to 'paddle only' but...

In Art, we made tie-dye swatches at the beginning of the week and evaluated the outcomes such as: colour scheme, technique and application of the dye. We then decided on which technique and colour scheme we would like then created our own T-shirts. They are currently hanging out to dry in my garden and they look amazing! Can you spot which one is yours?

On Friday, the Mayor of Polperro came in to annouce the winners of the Polperro Festival programme cover competition. Congratulations to DAISY for winning 3rd place, VERITY for 2nd place and MAX B for his 1st place entry for Chaipel class!

In other areas of the curriculum, Chaipel have been learning about classification, moving on from animals this week to plants for our final week this half term. Y5s had Music with Mrs Butlin, whilst the Y6s were down at Talland beach, practising for our upcoming Polperro Fesitval in June.

REMINDERS
Next week is only a 4-day week, finishing on Thursday for pupils.
The swimming pool is ready so please make sure you have your swimming kit in every day as we intend to make the most of it. Each pupil must have swimming kit, towel and a swim cap. Please see the secretary if you do not have a swim cap.

That's all from me so have a lovely weekend and see you all on Monday!

Another busy week for Landaviddy Class!

We have been keen Scientist's this week, designing and conducting an experiment to discover whether all magnets are the same strength. We couldn't believe how many paper clips were attracted to each magnet! In History, we started to created fact file posters about Sir Francis Drake, following our visit to the National Maritime Museum last week. On Thursday, we had a wonderful whole school Music session run by Mrs Butlin. We can't wait to share with you the songs we have been learning at the Polperro Festival in June. In Art, we explored the work of Coco Chanel and produced our own collaged hats, using images of Coco Chanel's fashion designs. In PE, we worked in groups to recreate different maps using various equipment, which was lots of fun!

We have been focussing hard this week on writing up our final neat copies of our biographies. All the children have done such a brilliant job, and we are blown away by their hard work and writing. Well done everyone!

In Maths, Year 2 have been looking at recognising and findings halves and quarters. Year 3 have been identifying fractions on a number line, which had been a challenge. However, everyone was determined to try their best.

Remember, please make sure you are reading your coloured book at home and bringing it in to school everyday with your reading record. Year 2 also have their phonics minibooks, relating to the phoneme/grapheme we are focussing on for that week.

We hope you have a lovely weekend full of sunshine, and look forward to seeing you on Monday.

Mrs Wilkie, Mrs Phillips and Miss Cullingford
