Remote Education Provision - Information for  Parents and Carers

This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to pupils and parents or carers about what to expect from remote education if children need to learn at home.

What should my child expect from immediate remote education in the first day or two of pupils being sent home?

A pupil’s first day or two of being educated remotely might look different from our standard approach, while we take all necessary actions to prepare for a longer period of remote teaching.

Polperro Primary Academy pupils will have access to Microsoft Teams, a remote learning platform. They have had sessions in school on Teams with the support of their teachers and are familiar with how to use it. Should pupils need to be educated remotely, they will be invited to join live teams sessions wherever possible. Workbooks and paper will be available.

Following the first few days of remote education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?

We teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible and appropriate. However, we have needed to make some adaptations in some subjects. For example, our PE provision is supported by videos and good quality online resources are provided; practical science activities are adjusted to accommodate what reasonably can be carried out at home or links to high quality teaching videos are provided.

Remote teaching and study time each day 
How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?

For EYFS and KS1, we aim to offer 3 hours of daily provision: 
Morning Provision: English and/or Maths live session daily; reading and phonics/spelling maths or English live session daily Afternoon Provision: enquiry lessons (these will follow an enquiry question and will be led by the children’s interests) or PE /PSHE/music/RE 

For KS2, we aim to offer 4 hours of daily provision:
Morning Provision: English and Maths live sessions daily; reading and spelling 
Afternoon Provision: enquiry lessons (these will follow an enquiry question and will be led by the children’s interests) and PE /PSHE/music/RE

How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?

Microsoft Teams is used for delivery and assessment for all year groups, daily for years 1-6. We also use Tapestry (Y1 and EYFS) to share work and feedback. In years 1-6 we use Mathletics and TT Rockstars which pupils have logins for. All classes have a blog on the school website which outline’s the following day’s learning. A learning grid is uploaded daily along with documents needed to support the learning.

If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils may not have suitable online access at home. We take the following approaches to support those pupils to access remote education:

• If parents and carers need support with devices they should contact the school Devices can be lent using a home/school agreement for using a school device
• If parents and carers need support with devices that enables an internet connection, they should contact the school to make a request. The school will work with the allocation from the DfE and county to support access where appropriate and
• For parents/carers who do not have online access, school is able to provide printed copies of materials needed for online learning. Please contact the office to request these
• For parents/carers who do not have online access, pupils can submit work to their teachers by dropping it into school (please call first).

How will my child be taught remotely?

We use a combination of the following approaches to teach pupils remotely:

Live sessions:
For children in KS1 and KS2 the primary method of remote education will be through Microsoft Teams. EYFS will have a weekly set of activities based around the EYFS curriculum. They will also have a weekly Teams check in with the teacher and occasional live sessions which cover the wider curriculum such as music.

Additional methods that will be used include:
• recorded teaching (e.g. Oak National Academy lessons, White Rose maths videos; video/audio recordings made by teachers)
• printed paper packs produced by teachers (e.g. workbooks, worksheets)
• commercially available websites supporting the teaching of specific subjects or areas, including video clips or sequences
• long-term enquiry question and/or internet research activities that will form part of the live teaching tasks.

What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?

• KS1 and KS2 children are expected to log in to live lessons daily, to contribute to lessons as they would in school and to complete the work set. They are also expected to send in their work to their teacher when requested.

• EYFS children are expected, with the support of their parents, to attend check-in sessions at least weekly

• Parents can support their children by setting routines to support learning, such as ensuring the child is ready to log in on time and has the resources necessary for the lesson. Parents should communicate by email with the class teacher regarding any issues which arise.

How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?

• Our teachers will check engagement through Teams and Tapestry daily and through emails sent by parents/carers when work has been requested

• Should our teachers become concerned about engagement, they will email or call parents/carers to offer support and guidance. Short Teams sessions 1-1 may sometimes be offered to support engagement.

How will you assess my child’s work and progress?

Feedback can take many forms and may not always mean extensive written comments for individual children. For example, whole-class feedback or quizzes marked automatically via digital platforms are also valid and effective methods, amongst many others. Our approach to feeding back on pupil work is as follows:

• Verbal feedback will be given where needed during live sessions on TEAMS. The chat function may also be used for feedback during live sessions

• Written feedback may also be sent by email

• IN KS2 pupils will receive some feedback each day during live lessons and weekly in KS1

Additional support for pupils with particular needs How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils in the following ways:

• The teacher’s planning accommodates the needs of all pupils. Personalised learning grids are provided where needed and occasional 1-1 live sessions are held with the teacher to offer support

• 1-1interventions may be offered on site or online (Teacher or TA led). • Pupils who cannot easily access remote education will be offered a place at school

• Pupils in KS1 and EYFS who are not on site will be contacted regularly by the teacher and/or Head of School to ensure support is in place for remote learning.

• The Head of School will continue to work with external agencies to ensure that support for families continues to be available
