Polperro Primary Academy   Week ending Friday 17th October

by Helen Fitzsimmons

Hello Everyone,

Another busy week in Penhallow has included making bread, working as a team to build large structures during play, and some drama work during English lessons.

Reception have finished their English work, all about The Little Red Hen, and thoroughly enjoyed following instructions to make, bake and eat their own bread. It smelled delicious.

Year 1 and 2 have been learning all about letter writing, as well as writing from the perspective of a different character. We have read 'The Day the Crayons Quit' by Oliver Jeffers and there were some fantastic responses from the children about the different characters and how the story shows us how the characters feel.

In science this week, we learnt all about sorting and classifying different animals based on their characteristics. We played games and practically sorted toy animals, as well as using venn diagrams and classification keys to sort animals.

We enjoyed being outside again this week. This time, during an RE lesson, where we found objects that were mentioned in the Christian story of creation, such as trees, flowers, and living creatures.

Have a lovely weekend,

from The Penhallow Team

Friday 17th October

On Monday, we had a brilliant time with the Pop up Play Village! The children loved exploring all the different role play areas, including a construction site, hospital, baby nursery and campsite. It was wonderful to see their imaginations come to life as they worked together, took on different roles, and used lots of great language in their play. The village gave everyone the chance to be creative, problem solve and have lots of fun.

On Friday we took part in Wear Red Day 2025 to show our support for anti-racism and to stand together against discrimination. By wearing red, we helped raise awareness and showed that everyone should be treated with kindness, respect and fairness. It was a great opportunity to talk about the importance of equality and celebrating our differences.

TALLAND'S BLOG 17.10.25

Happy weekend everyone! Photo dump incoming...

Please don't forget to send your child in to school this Monday wearing clothes suitable for the woods (they probably will get mucky).

A huge well done to Flora this week for being chosen as our person of the week for her fabulous biome she created at home and brought in to share with the class... I loved the moss, the soil, the plants and the little Lego character!

We are organising a girls' football club for years 3, 4, 5 and 6 run by a football organisation. Please make sure you sign your child up as soon as possible if they are interested because if we don't have enough people, unfortunately the club will not run.

We hope you have a lovely weekend!

Signing off Mr. Langley and Mr. Bishop.

Cross Country Success Congratulations to all our runners who completed their first race last Friday at Great Trethew, some of them racing for the first time. We had an impressive turnout of 22 pupils, each running brilliantly and demonstrating fantastic team spirit by cheering each other on throughout the event. The next race is on 14th November. Please return any running vests to school as soon as possible so we can ensure we have enough for everyone on race day.

Clubs There will be no Alternative Sports Club on Tuesday 21st October because of staff training and no gardening or football club on Thursday 23rd October because of the school discos.

Girls' Football. We are planning to start a girls' football club for students in Years 3 to 6, held on Tuesdays after school, beginning after the half-term break. If your child is interested in joining, please email the school secretary as soon as possible. So far, we've only received four official sign-ups, which isn't enough to run the club despite 15 girls expressing interest. We'd love to make this club happen, but we need more confirmed participants to move forward.

Harvest Donations Reminder that we are collecting donations for the foodbank in Liskeard. If you would like to donate, please send your donation in with your child or bring it to reception where there is a collection box. There will also be a collection point in the nursery. We will be taking donations to the foodbank at half term.

Parent Consultations Parent consultations will be held after half term during the week commencing 10th November. We will send details out early next week.

Neighbourhood Policing Team During half term the local Neighbourhood Policing Team will be out and about in their community van visiting villages and neighbourhoods across the Looe sector. They will be in the school car park on 30th October from 1130-1230 to chat with about local concerns, give crime prevention advice and share community issues that matter to you.

Have a good weekend.

Another Busy Week in R/1!

What a wonderful and action-packed week of learning it's been in Reception and Year 1!

In Maths, Year 1 have been working hard to add doubles and explored adding three one digit numbers. Over in Literacy, the children have enjoyed innovating parts of our class story and are now busy rewriting their own versions.

Reception have been doing brilliantly with their phonics, learning new sounds and exploring rhyming words after reading Room on the Broom.

In Forest School, Reception had great fun designing and making their own bird houses. Meanwhile, Year 1 have been practicing their basketball skills, learning how to bounce the ball using their fingers.

Our Reception children have also been learning about the organs in the body, as well as finding the pulse and beat in music. They've been singing their hearts out too, practicing Harvest songs with Mrs Butlin.

In PSHE, we discussed the consequences of our behaviour, thinking carefully about the choices we make and how they affect ourselves and others.

Well done, R/1 - another fantastic week of learning and exploring together!

What a busy week we have had. Our Art is really coming together; we have completed our nebula and star clusters, our planet(s) and our foreground. Next week, we will put all elements together and then create a light and dark effect by using chalk and charcoal.

In Maths, we have been completing our first set of SATs papers and then going through them with our learning partners to help each other with our next steps. For English, we have been looking at the features of a non-chronological text, identifying the use of parenthesis in our sentences and uplevelling our writing using precise vocabulary which we learnt how to apply in our last piece of writing.

On Friday, we had Kim back in from Barnado's to complete our PSHE sessions on healthy relationships. The children were a credit to the school and we had some great discussions which gave everyone food for thought.

POLITE NOTICES
Remember that the Spooky Disco is on next Thursday - tickets to be purchased at Reception.

If any girls would like to sign up for our Girl's Football Club after school on a Tuesday, could you please let us know ASAP as a coach will be coming in to train them up!

Congratulations to Thomas and Kora for being our People of the Week (demonstrating our school values) and to Frankie for achieving his 66 Club badge.

That's all from us so have a lovely weekend,

Miss Randle and Mrs Clary.

This week we practised using running stitch in DT, and we could not believe how quickly everyone managed to pick it up. We had to adopt our growth mindsets, but our determination shone through! Some of us may choose to use running stitch next week, when joining parts on to our sock puppets. In Science, we explored how different animals are best suited to the habitats they live in. We learnt about camels and the special features they have which help them to live in the desert. We also looked are polar bears. Can you recall any of the special features they have? During Music with Mrs Butlin, we practise using the chime bars and completing 4 beat patterns.

In Maths, we have made a fantastic start on our Addition and Subtraction unit, adding and subtracting 1s, 10s and 100s. We have been working on how to present our calculations neatly in our books and used pictorials to support our understanding.

In English, we have been writing up our recounts, focusing on quality over quantity. With this in mind, we have diligently used our classroom resources to support our writing. Next week, we will finish editing and get these written up neatly.

Congratulations to April and Jemima for being chosen as Landaviddy's People of the Week. And a big well done to Brody for achieving his 99 club badge.

Animal Sock Puppets
As part of our enquiry 'Who rules the animal kingdom?', we have designed and planned to make our own animal sock puppets in DT. On Wednesday 22nd October, we will be finally making our designs. We have a selection of brand new socks available for the children to use in school, which were kindly donated to us. However, if your child would like to bring in their own sock from home to use when creating their sock puppet, they are welcome to do so. Of course, please do let me know if you have any questions.

We hope you have a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing you next week.

by Darren Woolner

This week in Lantic we have had loads of fun learning how to write instructions for carving a pumpkin. We all had a go at scooping out the seeds and pumpkin flesh! We then wrote our set of instructions using bossy verbs to make our writing accurate and interesting.

Lantic have really loved this and they should be really proud of their writing. In maths, we have been exploring addition and subtraction, learning to subtract within 10. We have been using counters to help us. In DT we finished our wheel and axle pull along toys which all look very colourful and fun! We then evaluated our end products and decided what we liked and what we could improve on. In PE, we have been playing mini cricket and got some amazing games on the go.There are some very talented cricketers in Lantic!

On Friday we had an amazing skipping workshop where we developed our skills. We then saw a skipping show from our professional which was absolutely fascinating - she even did 'pretzel skipping'! What a week! As usual please continue to read with your children at home for 10-15 minutes per day. Anton maths should be all working well now and there is work set for this week. Have an amazing weekend - 4 days left until half term for the children!

Year 6 Bikeability
I really loved taking part in Bikeability! We had so much fun and learned loads about how to stay safe while cycling around Wadebridge. It wasn't just about riding bikes - it was also about learning new skills, supporting each other, and building confidence. Our instructor, Phil, taught us all about F.O.R.K, which stands for:
• First
• Observation
• Road Position
• Communication
He said that if we always remember F.O.R.K, we'll be much safer on the road - and he was right. It helped us stay calm even when things got a bit tricky. One of the best parts of the experience was the teamwork in our group. We encouraged each other, waited for those who needed more time, and shared tips to help everyone improve. It didn't matter if someone was nervous or made a mistake - we helped each other keep going.
From Phoebe 6W

Year 4 Trip to Bodmin Jail
As part of our Victorians learning journey, we visited Bodmin Jail to discover what life was like for prisoners in the past. The visit gave us an immersive experience and really helped us to understand Victorian punishments and crime. One of the most exciting (and slightly spooky!) parts was exploring the cellars where prisoners were once kept. We could imagine how cold, dark and frightening it must have been.
• Bryleigh said, "It's really cool but really scary!"
• Jay explained, "It's haunted!" - linking to the many Victorian ghost stories and myths we learnt about.
• Ellie learnt about the mysterious Beast of Bodmin Moor.
• Masuma found it interesting that prisoners had to spin the huge wheel 15,000 times a day for the mill - an example of the hard labour used as punishment in the Victorian period.
• Toby discovered that the Lightford brothers were pickpockets who got sent to jail.
• Brodie learnt that people always had to go to court before being sent to prison, helping us compare justice systems then and now. The trip linked well to our Victorian studies - it helped us understand how punishment and prison life reflected the values and challenges of Victorian society. We came back with real-life examples to bring our classroom learning to life.
From the Year 4 team

Year 5 Stay and Learn
All the Year 5 pupils had a grand time this morning! They welcomed their parents into a 'Retail Park' that they created. Some of the shops were: WadeWell Pharmacy, Bridge Schools Build-a-Bear and the Old Bridge Bakery. The parents had to help us with real-life maths to help with our shopping. There were 3 stations - Callister's Clothing, OD's Food Court and Wilton's Wacky Party Parlour. The children and parents had to work out questions and stay in budget. We finished by playing I'm a mathematician get me out of here! using whiteboard paddles to reveal our answers like we do in class. The parents got a little bit competitive with this!
From Isabella 5B

Lost Property
Next week, please take a look at the lost property outside the main entrance. Anything not claimed by Thursday will be donated to either FOWPA or a local clothing bank. FOWPA are also on the lookout for donations of any items of school uniform to add to the nearly new uniform stall. Please drop off as usual in the collection basket in the office foyer, thank you.

Parent Teacher Consultations (PTCs) - Tuesday 21st & Wednesday 22nd October
The teachers look forward to meeting with you to share how your child has settled in and the progress they are making next week.

Where to go for the appointment

If you arrive earlier than your appointment, please come to the Hall, where there will be refreshments kindly provided by Caterlink. A few minutes before your appointment, please make your way to your child's classroom, waiting outside on the seats until called in. We need everyone's support in keeping to time. Unfortunately if you arrive late, we will still need to finish the appointment on time, given other parents will be waiting. It's also important for our staff, so they can get home after a longer day than usual. Thank you for your support.

Children's books

Teachers will be sharing with you some of your children's work/books. Following the meeting, you are welcome to take these to the Hall to look through (and have some refreshments). Once finished, there will be boxes in the Hall to drop them off before leaving.

Extra-Curricular Activities (ECAs)
A reminder that there are no teacher-led ECAs w/b Monday 20th October. Pro20 will be running as normal. There is no Dance on Friday 24th October, as school is closed for INSET. All ECAs will be running again after half term from Monday 3rd November until Friday 5th December.

House Points
Congratulations to this week's winners, Puffins. Overall, Choughs maintain the lead:
Choughs - 2200
Swans - 2050
Puffins - 1873
Cormorants - 1796

Friday 17th October

Some of this week's wonderful exploration has included:

Learning phonemes ff/ll/ss and digraph /s- making z sound. The children have learnt these sounds and then have worked hard to use these sounds, and previously learnt ones, to orally blend. Next week we will recap the sounds so far. After half term we return to the beginning of level 2 and we repeat the level with a strong emphasis on writing.

This week we have been finalising our English unit. Children have been discussing adults that can help us at school and within our community. Children decided to try and find Mrs. Waring, Mr Smith, Brian and Mrs. Juleff as they help us in school, so we went on an 'adult hunt' to find them. On Thursday we completed the second part and went for a walk to Looe Town to find adults that help us in our community. The children discussed who helps us in our community and why. The children found a member of the RNLI, a Fish Monger, a Pharmacist and a Postman. They discussed how all these adults help us and are all superheroes in their own right! We then became superheroes ourselves and cleared a part of Looe beach from plastic!

The children have been enjoying outside this week and have been making obstacle courses and problem solving together, they have been strengthening their fingers and hands by playing with playdough to make superheroes. In class the children have been practicing their scissor skills by making superhero scenes and completing pictures. They have been playing with puzzles and working as a team to make a massive marble run.

In PE this week the children continued ball skills with Ryan the coach, and they are progressing really well.

In maths this week we have explored mass and capacity. The children loved taking their maths lessons outside and using the cups in the water tray to explore capacity further.

Each week we discover more, and the children are progressing so well.

Another Fantastic Week of Fun and Learning!

What a busy and exciting week it's been in Tregantle Class!

The children have been fully immersed in our class story "Whatever Next!" by Jill Murphy. We've been learning lots of new words from the story, acting out Baby Bear's wonderful adventure to the moon, and sequencing the key parts to help us remember what happens first, next, and last. Everyone has shown amazing enthusiasm and imagination!

In our Wild Tribe session, we took inspiration from our rhyme of the week, "Dingle Dangle Scarecrow." The children worked brilliantly together, drawing around each other and using natural materials to create giant scarecrows! There were some very creative designs and plenty of teamwork on show.

Over in our Exploration Area, the children have been busy investigating bugs and soil. They've shown fantastic curiosity as they've dug, discovered, and talked about all the little creatures they found living underground.

We finished the week with a fun skipping workshop, where everyone had a go at learning new skipping techniques. The hall was full of smiles, laughter, and lots of jumping feet!

Another brilliant week in Tregantle Class - full of fun, learning, and adventure!

We have had a fantastic week of learning at Darite. Class 1 have been learning about Charles Macintosh and waterproof materials. They conducted an experiment to find out which materials repel water the best. Class 2 had an amazing afternoon with a group of people from Sterts who came in to work with them as part of a series of drama workshops. Thank you to everyone who came to our Harvest Celebration. The children really enjoyed cooking for you and performing their songs. We are extremely grateful for the food donations which will be collected by Liskeard and Looe Foodbank next week. Congratulations to all of the runners who took part in the East Cornwall School's Cross Country race at Great Trethew last Friday. The next race is on Friday 14th November at Lanhydrock. Next week we have the Autumn Term parent consultations. If you haven't booked a slot but would like to meet with Mrs Lake or Mrs Morris please book using Arbor. If you have any problems, or can't find a suitable time, please email Mrs Norris. Entry to the parent consultations will be through the main reception where you will be able to wait until your appointment. Clubs will continue to run as normal next week but school is closed to pupils on Friday for a staff INSET day.

Autumn

Exploring Poetry

This week, the children have been busy creating their own poems, following our full writing sequence. They began by sentence stacking together as a class, carefully planning their own ideas before drafting their first copies. We then focused on editing, making thoughtful improvements and adding new learning to produce their final best copies.

Next week, we're looking forward to sharing the poems in class. The children will have the chance to read their poems aloud, and we will record these readings so families can enjoy them too. You'll be able to listen to your child's poem through their Showbie portfolio.

Science Showcase

We have now completed our science unit on sound, and the children have developed some excellent scientific knowledge and vocabulary. During the final week of term, we'll be collating and showcasing everything they've learned - a fantastic way to celebrate their achievements.

Timetable Changes

After half term, our class timetable will be changing slightly. We'll send the updated timetable out next week so that families can plan for P.E. days and any other adjustments.

Comfy Classrooms

As the weather turns wetter and outdoor shoes make way for boots, we talked with the children about wearing slippers in class to help keep our classroom warm, clean and cosy. This idea was very popular, so if your child has a pair of slippers they'd like to wear during the school day, they can bring them in after half term.

Wishing everyone a lovely weekend,
Mrs W and Mr T

This week has been full of fantastic learning opportunities.

In English, we have started writing our non-chronological reports about where energy comes from. The children have been working really hard to include scientific language, interesting facts and structure their work so that it has cohesion. They are looking wonderful and I am amazed by how creative they are.

In maths, we have moved onto our new unit of fractions. We started by finding equivalent fractions and simplifying them. Next, we will learn how to add and subtract them.

We were lucky to have a skipping workshop today in the hall. It was hilarious and we learned many new skills. We started with simple skipping, then skipping backwards, hopping on one foot, crossing our arms and then jumping into a long rope. All of the children learned something new and I was impressed with their abilities.

We have also had the opportunity to take part in some orienteering outside using the new stations around school. In the first session, we went hunting for different animals and in the second session, we answered some questions about Mary Seacole and Nelson Mandela for Black History Month. We had to check each station for a number to see if we had got the answer correct.

Have a lovely weekend!

Miss Burton

October

This October has been a busy month. Eddie enjoyed a day out at the Wild Wood where he visited the Saxon Village. Here he found out how they lived. We explored the different types of huts they lived in and tried out the wooden bed. It was not very comfy but the animal skins kept the Saxon's warm. The Saxon's had metal helmets and long tunics, using spears, axes and swords. The Spears were good for hunting, axes for wood and swords for fighting.

We were lucky to have a go at making flat bread and woodwork. The flat bread was delicious.

Wild Wood, also had a very tricky maze...we eventually found our way out. We had time at the end to visit the different animals including the bears. One was asleep in the tree.

Freddie enjoyed a special day at school, when the fire engine arrived for the children to take a look at and listen to fire people explain what they had to do in their job.

We have also been busy in class. Leo is showing one less from 5 as he joins in with the '5 Little Monkey's rhyme' (one of his favourites).

After School Clubs - Imaginations and Skills Flourishing

Our after-school clubs have been a huge success this term! From Eco Club to "What's in the Box?" Imaginary Club and STEM Club, children have been busy exploring, creating, problem-solving and working together. It's been wonderful to see their enthusiasm as they develop new skills, spark their imaginations and collaborate on exciting projects.

A Fond Farewell to Mrs Phillips

This week, we say a warm goodbye to Mrs Phillips, who has secured a new full-time teaching post. Mrs Phillips has been a brilliant addition to our school team over the past two years. Her positivity, care and dedication have made a real difference, and she will be greatly missed by staff and pupils alike. We wish her the very best in her new role.

Welcome to Miss West

We are delighted to welcome Miss Zoe West, who will be teaching Tregeagle Class every Thursday. Miss West brings a wealth of experience from working in small schools over the past ten years. She has a passion for outdoor learning, hands-on experiences and inclusive practice, and we are excited for the skills and energy she will bring to our school. She is in school today meeting the children and will begin teaching from next Thursday.

Clubs for Autumn 2

The list of after-school clubs for the second half of the Autumn term will be sent out next week - keep an eye out for some fantastic opportunities for the children to get involved.

Wishing all our families a lovely weekend.
