Children designed and made Christmas Lanterns for the second and now annual Polperro Christmas Lantern Procession which took place on 7 December just before the Christmas Lights were switched on.
We would like to thank the Polperro Christmas Lights Committee who paid for the willow, tissue paper, canes and glue to make the lanterns. Talland Class children used their imaginations to design some amazing lanterns which linked in with their enquiry question 'What's the Tradition?' The parade was attended by children of all ages and we look forward to making the lanterns again next year.
Polperro Environmental Warriors’ Eden Experience
By Leon and Morgan on behalf of the Environmental Warriors of Polperro Primary Academy
On Monday 2nd December, ten Polperro Primary Academy pupils, also known as the Environmental Warriors (EWs), went on a thought-provoking Eden Project experience to find out how Eden has worked on reducing their use of single use plastic. They did this as part of their work on becoming a Plastic-Free School, an initiative set up by Surfers Against Sewage.
To begin their research, they did a tour of the Mediterranean and Rainforest biomes to collect as much information as possible about Eden’s single plastic use and environmental awareness. They found that at Eden they could recycle plastic, paper, card, metal and food. They discovered chairs made from recycled marine waste consisting of nets, rope and plastic crates.
Signs at Eden are made from wood and metal, not plastic
Rainwater collected from the core building roof is used to flush the toilets, café food waste is used for compost so it is environmentally friendly. At Eden nothing goes to waste. Everything they use has come from natural or recycled materials.
As part of their investigation, the EWs took part in a Packaging Patrol workshop where they discovered that even plants have packaging which they use for protection and advertising. For example, the thick hard shell of the cocoa bean protects the cocoa; the beautiful morning glory flower uses its bright colours to attract pollinators such as bees. The spikes of the Spiny Mangrove plant protect it from potential predators.
At the end of the workshop the Polperro pupils examined the use of biodegradable plastic replacement packaging. They found that corn starch packaging looks exactly like plastic but biodegrades. Envelopes made from banana leaves biodegrade. Potato starch is used to produce a replacement for polystyrene.
Nick, the workshop leader, was extremely impressed with the group and said “The knowledge of this group is advanced in many ways.”
The EWs learnt a lot from this experience and have now made the decision to reexamine the school’s methods of recycling or disposing of waste. In addition, they have already pledged to no longer use plastic pint cups in their annual Christmas competition. Instead they will use a biodegradable replacement.
The EWs will be sharing their new environmental knowledge with the rest of the school in a special assembly as part of their war on single-use plastic.
Budding musicians have played their first guitar concert of the year in front of parents and pupils. Their set included covers of songs by Snow Patrol and Kings of Leon which went down well with the audience. Well done to our youngest guitarist whose solo performance of 'Shotgun' (guitar and vocals) stole the show.
We are looking forward to their next performance already.
On Thursday evening we held our first fashion show to raise funds for school. Seven wonderful models (mums, grans and staff) braved the catwalk to show off the clothes, resulting in plenty of sales. It was a really enjoyable evening which raised £420 which we hope to spend on trips over the coming year. Thank you to all involved in organising the event, especially Mrs Platt and Mrs Roberts and of course, all of the models.
Our next fundraiser is the Christmas Fair on 13th December at 3pm.
This beautiful Christmas card is taken from an original painting in oils on canvas, with snow added, by Artist Jenny Milburn. It is one of the artist’s top favourite views in the world.
Jenny painted it as part of her recovery from a traumatic car accident. This is her first painting in oils and she was delighted with the result. After putting it on Facebook and receiving hundreds of positive comments from friends and strangers about the painting, she decided to turn it into a Christmas card to sell, giving all of the profits to Polperro Primary Academy.
Cards are being sold for £2.00 each, complete with a white envelope size 155mm x 128mm. They are available from the office and will also be on sale at the Fashion Fundraiser and Christmas Fair.
All profits go to the school.
Thank you Jenny.
We have had a fun day in school today dressed in pyjamas raising money for Children in Need.
Thank you everyone for dressing up and bringing in your £1 donations and copper coins. We have raised well over £100.
We have held the first meeting of our Plastic Free Schools Group which has been set up to encourage the school to take action on single use plastics.
At the meeting, the group of ten pupils agreed to help the school on its journey to plastic free status and signed themselves and the school up to the 'plastics revolution' .
Plastic Free Schools is a pupil led initiative set up by Surfers Against Sewage designed to guide schools through the process of ditching single-use plastic. Through running this programme, we hope to give pupils the power to create positive, lasting environmental change.
There are five objectives for the school to follow in order to reach Plastic Free Schools Status. The group's first step will be to look at what plastics are in and around the school that aren’t necessary, and to think of ways to replace them.
Watch this space for what we find.
Come and join us on Thursday 28th November for an evening of shopping from 7:30 onwards.
A full range of exciting branded clothing will be available to buy on the night from White Stuff; M & S; Wallis; and Lily & Me.
Tickets £5 from the office (includes a glass of wine) or see Mrs Platt for details.
We look forward to seeing you there.
League competition
The first winners of our attendance league are Chaipel Class whose attendance for the first half term of the year was the highest in the school and above the 96% we are aiming for. School Council decided that the prize should be a treat decided by the class and Chaipel Class are going to have a class celebration one afternoon soon.
Win a Bike
Our annual ‘prize draw’ is in place which all children who attend school for a whole calendar month are entered into. That’s 11 chances to win per year, culminating in July with the child whose name is drawn out winning a bike and helmet up to £150.
Thank you to all parents, grandparents and carers who joined in with our Autumn Art Afternoon activities recently. Our KS1 and Reception children created some fantastic tree pictures and leaf sun catchers. In Chaipel class everyone enjoyed making a range of creatures, out of conkers leaves and cones. The challenge in Talland Class was to create a wreath from autumn resources which led to some impressive designs. Autumn mobiles were designed and made from sticks, apples, wool, hydrangea flowers and cones in Landaviddy class with intricate designs created by talented parents!
