Welcome back Landaviddy. We hope you had a lovely half term break!

This week has gone by very quickly! We launched our brand new enquiry 'What was new about the Stone Age?' by thinking about timelines and how we can plot historical events in chronological order. In Art, we began to explore examples of cave art and identified what we liked and how it made us feel. We experimented using our sketching skills to replicate sections of the cave art we observed.

In Maths, we have continued our addition and subtraction unit. This week all the children have shown great perseverance when working mathematically.

In English, we have started a new unit linked to our enquiry. We've made predictions about an unfamiliar story using evidence from the illustrations and all the children engaged in whole class discussions when reading our focus text, 'Stone Age Boy' by Satoshi Kitamura. Next week, we will focus on developing our sentence writing and will aim to begin innovating the story when crafting our own narratives.

In celebration of Black History Month, Landaviddy have been learning about the Olympic gold medal boxer, Nicola Adams. We have loved learning about her life and the passion she has for boxing. The class shared what they believed to be her best qualities in a whole school assembly; KIND, FEARLESS, EXCELLENT, DETERMINED and MIGHTY.

Congratulations to Charlie and Flora for being Landaviddy's People of the Week. A big well done to Harley for achieving his 77 club badge this week!

We hope you have a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing you all on Monday.

Thursday 19th October 2023

We have made it to half term! This week, we have applied our knowledge of animals to create our own information posters. Today, we concluded our enquiry by answering the question 'Who rules the animal kingdom?' using all the amazing Wider Curriculum learning we have done this half term - just look at our enquiry classroom display! We also enjoyed a wonderful music lesson with Mrs Butlin.

In English, we completed our recounts of our class trip to Porfell and have began to self assess our writing to help us identify our next steps. In Maths, we have continued to work through our new unit on Addition & Subtraction which we will continue to explore this further after half term.

In celebration of Black History Month, we have learnt about the life and achievements of Nicola Adams. The children loved learning about her life and we can't wait to share what we have found out with the rest of the school.

Congratulations to Emma and Archie for being Landaviddy's People of the Week.

Please continue to read daily, practise spellings and KIRFS during half term.
In order to support reading and spellings at home,  I have set up TwinklGo for you to access. Just go to https://www.twinkl.co.uk/go and enter the pin code for your year group.

Year 2: XP6459

Friday 13th October 2023

Another week is over in Landaviddy class. We have been enjoying exploring the animal kingdom this week, researching animals to create an information poster. In Science, we learnt about food chains and created some examples of our own. We then applied our understanding of food chains to  program sprites for a food chain within a habitat of our choosing on Scratch. I was blown away by all the children's efforts.

We have continued our addition and subtraction unit this week by Year 3 looking at adding and subtracting 1s, 10s and 100s, and Year 2 using their knowledge of number bonds to add and subtract, as well as recognising related facts.

In English, we have started writing up our recounts from our wonderful Porfell Wildlife Park class trip. We've looked at using conjunctions to join clauses and writing using fronted adverbials. So far, I have been very impressed with the writing that all the children have achieved. Next week, we will finish these off.

Congratulations to Lowen for being Landaviddy's Mathematician of the week and Lucy and Summer for being our Visible Learners of the half term!

We hope you have a fabulous weekend and look forward to seeing you next week, for our final week of fun before half term!

Miss Gibbings, Mrs Phillips and Mr H

Friday 6th October 2023

What an AMAZING week we have had in Landaviddy!

We have continued exploring our enquiry question 'Who Rules the Animal Kingdom?' in Geography by using aerial photography to recognise how climate change has impacted the Arctic habitat. The children were amazed at how much of the ice had melted from 2000 to 2022.

On Thursday, we visited Porfell Wildlife Park & Sanctuary. We had a fantastic time! We saw so many different animals; lemurs, owls, raccoon dogs, skunks...but our favourites by far were the meerkats! Especially, as we had just finished the story 'Meerkat Mail' by Emily Gravett, to inspire some wonderful postcard writing. In the afternoon, we were given the opportunity to feed the chickens that roamed around the park and hand fed the farm animals. Thank you to Mrs Hood and Miss Gilbert for joining us for the day!

We have began to arrange the events of the day into chronological order, and have defined nouns, verbs (adverbs Y3) and the language we use when writing in the past tense. Next week, we will be focussing on planning and writing a detailed recount of our trip!

Well done to Landaviddy's person of the week - Lowen. Congratulations to Isabelle for completing her 22 club, Amber for her 33 club and Harley and Jamie for their 66 club!

We hope you have a great weekend enjoying the sunshine!

Miss Gibbings, Mrs Phillips and Mr H

Friday 29th September 2023

Wow! What a brilliant week Landaviddy class has had!

In Computing, we have continued working hard understanding algorithms and the commands we can use to make a set of instructions repeat and make a sprite say 'Hello!'. In DT, we finally made our sock puppets! We were so impressed with the focus and determination all the children demonstrated when making their ideas come to life. What animals can you spot here? Can you find your puppet?

We have nearly come to the end of our Place Value unit in Maths. Year 2 have been focussing on comparing and ordering numbers and objects this week, along with counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. Year 3 have also been comparing and ordering numbers to 1000 and applied their knowledge of the 5 times table when counting in 50s.

In English, we have all written up our postcards from the perspective of a Meerkat on holiday. Hopefully we can complete the finishing touches to these next week, so we can be ready to move on to our non-fiction focus on recounts for the last part of the half term.

Congratulations to Emma for being Landaviddy's Person of the Week! No one achieved any 99 club badges this week, however we had so many who were very close!

Reminder
Our class trip to Porfell Wildlife Park and Sanctuary is next week on Thursday 5th October. Please ensure you have returned your consent slip and paid your contribution on ParentPay, if you haven't done so already. Children can wear their own clothes with their red school jumper/cardigan, along with a waterproof coat and sensible footwear.

Of course, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

We hope you have a restful weekend and look forward to seeing you all next week!

Miss Gibbings, Mrs Phillips and Mr H

Friday 22nd September 2023

We have had a fantastic week of learning in Landaviddy class.

On Monday, Mrs Phillips covered the Creation story with the class in RE and the children had a brilliant lesson in PE exploring and refining their fundamental skills.

As part of out enquiry this week, in Science we carried out an investigation around our school environment to find examples of 'Living', 'Dead' or have 'Never been alive'. All of the children were brilliant at applying their understanding of MRS GREN to help with their findings. In DT, we practised our sewing skills, ready for making our own animal sock puppets next week! All the children had to use their growth mindset by telling themselves "I can't do it YET" and all managed to achieve the running stitch and sewing on a button. I can't wait to see what your final puppets will look! Watch this space!

In Maths, we have continued our place value unit by focussing on counting on number lines to 100 in Year 2 and finding 1, 10 and 100 more or less in Year 3, before also moving on to number lines.

In English, we completed our desert setting descriptions using amazing vocabulary, and began planning and writing our postcards from the perspective of Sunny the Meerkat. Next week, we will edit and write our final postcard.

Our Writers of the Week are Emma (Y2) and Callum (Y3). I was so impressed with their dedication to their writing this week. Keep it up!
Congratulations to Amber and Ellie for being Landaviddy's People of the Week!
Massive well done to Nevaeh for completing her 11 club, Reuben and Lucy for their 22 club and Everly for her 44 club! I reckon we will have more children achieve badges next week!

Our first full week is done! Landaviddy class has had a wonderful week, continuing to explore 'Who Rules the Animal Kingdom?'. In Science, we have started to learn about life processes by learning MRS GREN. We have continued to discover algorithms in Computing, by constructing repeat commands on Turtle Logo. In DT, we investigated how to join different materials together, ready for making our own animal sock puppets in a few weeks.

The children have been working so hard in English this week, focussing on developing their descriptive writing skills. In Maths, we have carried on our Place Value unit by looking at how to partition numbers and representing this using part-whole models and number sentences.

Congratulations to Nevaeh, Anya and Jamie for being Landaviddy's People of the Week. A big well done to Everly for achieving her 33 club today.

Homework

Reading
All the children have been sent home with a new reading book at the end of last week. So many of you have already been reading at home! Please make sure you are reading daily. We ask that you read the book you have at least twice before changing it.

*Year 2 Minibooks*
Today, Year 2 have been sent home with a minibook which is used to support and reinforce the Phonics sound we have been revising this week. This needs to be returned every Thursday so we can replace it with the next one containing new sounds. If your child would like to complete the questions inside the minibook, please complete these on a separate piece of paper and I would be more than happy to have a look at them.

Spellings
I have attached the common exception word lists for Year 1/2 and 3/4. Any spelling practise you can do of these words at home would be great! I have attached some spelling strategies that you can use to practise these.

Maths
We would also like you to practice your times tables and number bonds. Mathletics (https://login.mathletics.com/) and TT Rockstars (https://play.ttrockstars.com/auth/school) can be accessed at home and support this. Your child's logins can be found in the back of their reading record. Please also practise your KIRFs at home as often as you can - Further information about this will be sent home next week.

Enquiry
Finally, attached below is a homework grid of activities relating to this half terms enquiry. Anything you do complete, we would love to see and share with the class!

We hope you have a lovely weekend!

Welcome Back Landaviddy!

We have had a fabulous, fun-filled week back to school in Landaviddy. Everyone has begun to settle into our routines. We are very excited for a wonderful year!

This week, we have been focussing on completing our Class Charter and taking our time to settle into Landaviddy life.  Our Enquiry question for this half term is 'Who Rules the Animal Kingdom?'. So far, in Geography we have been learning to name the continents and oceans through song, in Computing we created algorithms on Turtle Logo to draw squares and in DT we completed designs for animal sock puppets that we will be making this half term!

To end a brilliant first week, Landaviddy went swimming for the first time today, which they absolutely loved!

Congratulations to Lowen and Everly for being Landaviddy's People of the Week.

Reading Books
Everyone was sent home today with their new reading record and colour banded book. Some children have been sent home with two books; one Phonetically Decodable and one coloured banded book. We ask that children read their book twice at home before getting it changed. Further details regarding Homework, will be posted on next weeks' blog, so watch this space!

PE
Our PE days are Monday and Friday, so please make sure PE and swimming kits are complete in school everyday.

School Council
Congratulations to our School Council representatives; Lucy (Year 2) and Zac (Year 3). It was a close vote and we were so impressed with the confidence all the children had when standing in front of the class and giving their speeches! Well done everyone!

We hope you have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you next week.

Miss Gibbings, Mrs Phillips and Mr H
