Wonderful Woodlice 

Another week goes by in Landaviddy class, and what a week it has been! We have continued to explore our enquiry question 'Who Rules the Animal Kingdom?' in Science, where we investigated which conditions woodlice prefer the most. The children loved hunting in the garden for woodlice, which we carefully brought back to the classroom to observe and discover which conditions they were drawn to the most. We found our woodlice spent most of their time on dark, damp surfaces. Once complete, we took our woodlice safely back to their micro-habitat. 

In Geography, we made comparisons between the UK and Kenya, focusing on physical and human features. During Music with Mrs Butlin, we practised using the chime bars to create patterns which we performed to our partners. In DT, we explored how to join different materials together and evaluated which methods were best. This was lots of fun and helped us to start making decisions about how we may join different materials when creating our animal sock puppets.

We concluded our Place Value unit in Maths this week. All the children have done so well and shown a great understanding of Place Value. We have now moved on to Addition and Subtraction, starting today by applying numbers bonds within 10 to add tens and hundreds. 

In English, we have made progress towards writing up a recount of our Dartmoor Zoo trip. We practised using our 'doctor's kits' to operate on sick sentences and turn these into healthy sentences. We enjoyed working together to improve our writing. Next week, we will finish writing our recounts.

On Wednesday, we had our first class trip of the year to Dartmoor Zoo. We had a fantastic time. We started off the day with a close encounters workshop, where we got to see a cockroach, python and many other fascinating artefacts up close. After lunch, we explored the rest of the zoo and met their resident tiger, African lions and visited the reptile house. Our final workshop before heading home was a climate change problem solving activity, which really got us thinking. I have uploaded some pf the best photos from the day below.

In Maths, this week we have been using number lines to count and estimate numbers to 1000. This is often a tricky concept for the children, but they have all persevered and worked so hard.

In English, we finished writing up our postcards and have started our new unit on recount writing. We will be using our zoo trip as inspiration for our next piece of writing.

Fab Fitness and Sock Puppet Designs

On Wednesday, we celebrated National Fitness Day by participating in a range of fitness activities throughout the day. We had so much fun doing this and enjoyed moving our bodies! 

During Wider Curriculum lessons this week, we have continued to explore 'Who Rules the Animal Kingdom?' in Science, by exploring world habitats. We explored a range of big habitats and then chose our own to research. In Music, we have been composing eight beat patterns using body percussion. In DT this half term, we will be making our very own animal sock puppets. Today we had a go at creating some designs. Over the next few weeks, we will explore joining materials and sewing, before creating our sock puppets. 

In English, we have spent the week working hard on writing our postcards inspired by Meerkat Mail. Today, we began writing up our neat copies, which we hope to finish early next week. 

In Maths, we have been working hard on Place Value, recognised hundreds, tens and ones and counting on a number line to 1,000. As we near the end of this unit, we will be moving on to Addition and Subtraction.

Congratulations to Ida and Tommy for being chosen as Landaviddy's People of the Week, and a big well done to Sonny for achieving his 55 club badge this week. 

Some wonderful news, Jemima was chosen as one of the winners of the Polperro Arts Foundation Postcard Competition. She produced a wonderful postcard, which has been printed and can be purchased in the village. Well done Jemima! 

Reminder - We have our class trip on Wednesday 1st October to Dartmoor Zoo.

This week, in Science we sketched habitat maps of our school and identified the microhabitats we could find. All of the children worked so hard on these and the results were fantastic! In Music, we have been working on repeating patterns and composing our own with the class. During Geography, we learnt the 8 compass points, along with the location of the North and South Poles. We conducted research about each pole to understand what they are like as places. We have been developing our Fundamental skills in PE with Mrs Lister, which has been lots of fun! 

In English, we have been working hard on our descriptive writing and exploring 2A sentences. Today, we planned for writing our own postcards inspired by Meerkat Mail. Next week, we are looking forward to writing these up and creating our final postcards. 

In Maths, we have continued working hard on Place Value, focusing on partitioning. Presentation in our books has been a big focus this week, which all the children have taken great pride in.

Reminders
Meet the Teacher is being held on Wednesday 24th September at 2.45pm. I look forward to seeing you all then. 

Wednesday 24th September is also National Fitness Day. On this day, the children are encouraged to come to school wearing sports clothes or their PE kit.

Landaviddy have had an enjoyable week, settling into our  new routines as Year 3. In Science, we learnt about the 7 processes that all living things do, by learning the acronym MRS GREN. As Geographers, we consolidated our location knowledge of the 7 continents and 5 oceans, creating some fantastic world maps. Mrs Lister launched an excellent RE lesson with us on Showbie, which got us thinking about the Creation story. Our highlight of the week was exploring programming in Computing, by exploring a coding game. We had lots of fun recognising how to debug a sequence and constructing algorithms. 

In Maths, we have been working through our first unit on Place Value; counting on a number to 100 and exploring hundreds. We have enjoyed lessons this week and building upon our prior knowledge. 

In English, we have explored the actions and feelings of the main character, Sunny, from our focus text 'Meerkat Mail'. We practised the story using an oracy approach and designed our own story maps. We finished off the week writing the start of a character description, which we will finish next week.

Homework
Please find attached the Homework grid for this half term, along with the KIRFS for Autumn 1 for you to practise at home. In addition to this, please continue to read daily and practise your Y3 Statutory Word Spellings (attached below). I have also uploaded some spelling challenge cards which may help you when practising these. Children can also access TT Rockstars to practise their times table facts. Anything you can do at home can make a big difference to your learning! 

Reading Books
Everyone was sent home with their new reading record and colour banded book. We ask that children read their book twice at home before getting it changed, however longer reads can be changed after being read once. Please ensure you are reading as often as you can at home. We ask that this book is brought into school daily, so the children can access them during the school day. They also have a library book which is chosen as a reading for pleasure book. Opportunities to change library books will be weekly.
